Synopsis: In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

“I want revenge and then I want my crown.”

I started this book a few months ago and was bored. I could not seem to get into it. It started out really slow for me. I am also someone that has to be in the “mood” for a certain story and I just was not ready to read it. I decided to put it on my April TBR list and I am so glad I did. Yes it was slow at first but only because these characters run deep and are more intertwined than you realize at first.

On the Island of Fennbirn 3 triplets are born. Once their gifts start to show they are given to the foster families to be taught their gift. Their Mother is no longer Queen since the new queens have arrived. She names them and they go into the care of others. Brought up to hate their sisters so that they can kill them and take the crown for themselves. Pretty gory right? The gifts are from the Island. The Goddess they all  pray to. Katharine has the gift of poisons and even though she is amazing at combining and brewing the concoctions she can not handle them herself like the other poisoners can. Arsinoe is a naturalist who can not seem to find her gift. Naturalist can ripen fruit and bloom flowers. Make fields full of wheat and they also come with an animal companion. It takes time sometimes for their gifts to come, but time is not something Arsinoe has. Mirabella is an Elemental. She can control all but her favorite is the storms. The fire. She is strong and everyone knows it. Including the Priestesses of the Temple. They have disobeyed some very big rules in showing her favor. Mirabella is strong with elements but also strong of heart. Can she truly kill the sisters that she loves? So many politics and others trying to rule these young girls and I have a feeling they have other ideas. Within the year they are to try and kill the other two sisters and decide on a King Consort. These boys come from the mainland where there is no magic and have to swear loyalty to his Queen. I feel like maybe if I were one of these boys I would stay on the mainland!

This is only book one and it ended with quite the cliff-hanger. I’m glad I don’t have to wait for the next one to come out. I will be adding One Dark Crown to my list.

One response to “Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake”

  1. […] Three Dark Crowns was very slow at first for me. I actually bought it on vacation and couldn’t get into it. I came home and set it on my shelf and didn’t really think about it again. I decided I needed to read it. I have this rule of not buying books I’m not going to read. (ha ha.. funny I know. I do it anyway) I trudged through it and was very unexpectedly surprised to find that I really like it. I want to reread it and figure out why it was so slow in the beginning. It ended with a real cliff-hanger and now book 2 is on my list. This one I feel like is a middle recommend for me. YES. READ IT… if you don’t have anything else pressing or looking for something different. […]
