London barrister Jason Jonquil has spent his entire life working to establish his identity as a gentleman, a man of refinement like his father and brothers. But when fiery Spanish beauty Mariposa Thornton walks into his office, he finds himself losing his grasp on his dignified character. The woman is infuriating, pushing him to the limit of his legendary patience. However, her case seems simple enough—a small matter of inheritance. Or so he believes.
Once a well-born lady, Mariposa fought to survive the brutalities of Napoleon’s war on Spain. She braved horrific perils and undertook dangerous missions on behalf of those fighting against the invading French army. But her greatest battle still lies ahead: after being separated from her family, Mariposa sets in motion a plan to reunite with her loved ones in England. To avoid drawing the attention of the French, Mariposa dons a carefully crafted persona to conceal her true purpose. As Jason and Mariposa are drawn together by the case, they come to know the people beneath the masks they both wear.
When the truth of Mariposa’s quest is revealed, the couple is pulled into a mystery that will test the limits of their courage—and expose the true desire of their hearts.
I really enjoyed this historical romance. It was a quick read. The characters were funny and perfect for each other. This one was a proper romance. Sometimes I really just like reading a book that is just GOOD. A little love story that is about two people finding their perfect match even if it takes them awhile to see it.
Jason Jonquil comes from a respectable family and he grew up in house full of brothers. This book is book 4 in the Jonquil Brothers series. Jason used to get into all sorts of mischievous situations as a child. The bothers pulled all sorts of pranks and were very close. Now as an adult, Jason loses all sense of humor trying to be an upstanding, respectable gentleman. He has disguised his true self and is now.. . boring. Ha ha. That is until Mariposa comes along with her Abuela.
Mariposa and her Grandmother are from Spain. They have a few secrets they must keep in order to keep their family safe. IF they can find their family. The way Mariposa baits and teases Jason is absolutely hilarious. I was dying. Can they trust Jason and the Jonquil family to help them find the rest of their family? Can they, themselves, be trusted?
Character wise I feel that Sarah did an amazing job with the characters in this book. They all had a part to play and found themselves instead. Jason being a gentleman but also knowing it’s okay to have a sense of humor. Mariposa had forgotten what it was like to be taken care of. Her father and older brother both died in the war and her mother had fallen apart with the loss. Mariposa has been taking care of her family and hadn’t had the luxury of thinking about herself until Jason steps in and helps her. They both drive each there crazy. The few Spanish phrases and the crazy grandmother were unexpected and enjoyable. The Jonquil family in itself is enjoyable. I love seeing a happy family. A family that loves each other and is close.
As far as the storyline and plot goes I feel that it was a good strong one. There was a little bit of a mystery and there wasn’t really a time when I thought something didn’t add up. It was well thought out and executed, with happy ending to finish it off. My favorite kinda of story!
I like when I can sneak in a fast paced romantic read. I felt like this one hit all the spots! Very enjoyable!
