Synopsis:

No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

I want to start off saying that I listened to this one on Audible. I have seen it every where and felt like it was just calling my name. It has taken me FOREVER to finish it. Lots of people have loved this book. In fact I was just up in the city at my favorite little book shop and while I was browsing, 2 girls went straight for this book. The second book in the series just came out and this book shop does signings, and lots of times has an autographed copy in their shop. It seemed like that was exactly what these girl were after. I was happy for them of course. There is nothing like finding what your looking for and finding a signed copy! YAY! While I was listening to them gush about how much they loved this story, I found myself wondering why. (I know.. I shouldn’t eavesdrop..) It held my attention enough to finish it but I couldn’t really get into it. I didn’t really fall for a character, or the world that was created. The love triangle between Lada, Radu and Mehmed was weird. All the fighting and wanting to go to war got really old. They didn’t ever go to war.. really. Mostly just talked about it. I don’t know. This book wasn’t bad. I didn’t hate it. .. but at the same time I didn’t really like it either. I wasn’t even TEMPTED to buy the next book, even though I saw a signed copy at the bookshop. So read at your own risk!

Thanks for reading!
