ravenboys

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

Title: The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle #1)

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Published: September 18th 2012 by Scholastic Press

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal

Stars:                 Content Rating: 1

Synopsis:

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Hello fellow readers!! As always, thank you for following my blog. It really does mean so much to me. I started blogging because I had so many people asking me what I had read lately, and I thought, “I should just blog about what I read!” That being said, it has grown so much more than I would have thought and it makes me happy to share something I love with you all!
Now, the thing that makes my reads a 5 star rating instead of 4 stars is this: would I read it again? The answer is obviously YES! This series has 4 books. They are ALL out. I know that is a biggie for some of my readers. They don’t love the anticipation of waiting 5 years for the whole series to be released! Am I right? If I have the whole series I binge read it so fast! Which is fun, BUT, I also like it when I am forced to wait. It makes the next book so much more magical. Don’t get me wrong, it kills me, but I like having something to look forward to.
Okay, okay. On to this book! I have had it on my list FOREVER. Just like most books on any TBR list. They sit in my Amazon cart, or Goodreads list until I finally make time for them. Or in this case, a few friends that wanted to read it together. I am so happy I did! All the characters are interesting. They all have a role to play and it took me a minute to see how important each one is, and even now I am only at the tip of the iceberg.
Gansey is a complex character. He has everything he could possibly ever want, but after a near death experience and whisper of “Glendower” he is obsessed with it. With unlimited amounts of money he spares no expense.  Adam is not rich. He lives in a double wide with an abusive father and he is determined to make his way in the world. He works multiple jobs and goes to Aglionby on a partial scholarship. Ronan is… dark and dangerous. After his father’s death he becomes this brooding, mystery. I really can’t figure him out yet but I know that his part in the story is significant. He knows Latin like its not a dead language and finds a baby Raven he names Chainsaw. Noah is the quiet one with a past. A past that not even I saw coming. He cares for his friends and seems to be wiser than his years. These boys make up The Raven Boys. Blue is funny. I love her character. She comes from a family of physics but is not one herself. After her St. Marks eve encounter with Gansey, fate or destiny has made it clear she would be in their lives. Working together to find Glendower is an adventure that starts out as something fun, and then it gets real. Magic is real. The story no longer just a story. It’s alive and they all play a part in bringing it about. Really, I can not tell you how much I loved this book!
After the second chapter I had legit chills. I was hooked that fast. 2 chapters. I love it so much when I can get sucked in that fast. The story is intriguing the whole way through. The little bits and pieces that eventually come together, to create the best story ever. The twists were so unexpected and I loved them. I bought only the first book and now I have to wait for the next in the series to arrive. I can’t wait to get my hands on it! You better believe I am buying the rest of this series, and yes.. I will most likely devour them when they get here. Well done Maggie Stiefvater. Well done.
I hope you enjoyed my review! As always, happy reading!!

  1. I waited to read your review till I’d finished the book. I wholeheartedly agree with you. This book is magical, slightly dark but also slightly funny, and the characters are just so great. I adore Gansey!!

  2. […] This review is going to be a little short but hopefully sweet. I don’t like giving out spoilers .. which if you are reading this review and have not read the first book STOP and at least read the review for Raven Boys first. […]

  3. […] until I got some answers! All the characters come back in the 3rd installment of The Raven Cycle. Raven Boys and The Dream Thieves are only the beginning. I feel like this wasn’t my favorite so far but […]
