Synopsis:

The son of a cold-hearted duke, Nicholas St. Mauer isn’t one to involve himself in society…or open his own heart to anyone. But driven by honor, the reclusive Earl of Somerton feels obliged to keep a watchful eye on Lady Emma Cavensham. She possesses a penchant for passions unbecoming a woman that finds Nick in constant peril of losing his well-structured solitude. She even dared kiss Nick once―an utterly unladylike, and delightful, lapse…

Emma can’t deny the appeal of the earl’s attention, and occasional affection, but she has no need for a man. There are worse fates than spinsterhood, as Emma knows too well. She still mourns the loss of her dear friend Lena, and is determined to prove Lena’s husband responsible for her death before he lures another innocent woman into a brutal marriage. But as Emma pursues her prey, a compromising moment upends all her plans. Now, with gossip swirling and her reputation in tatters, Nick may be the only man brave enough to join in Emma’s cause.. and fight for her heart.

Hello BookNerds! It has been awhile since I wrote a review. I read Crooked Kingdom and it put me in a deep, dark place that I couldn’t leave. I mean, the worst book hangover EVER. I will write a review on that one soon enough. Right now I need to tell you all about the book that got me over my hangover!

First, Janna MacGregor is the sweetest to send me a copy. It arrived right when I needed it. Talk about fate! I loved the first book of this series, The Bad Luck Bride, as it was a great story and introduced Emma and Nick. I just adore romances that put so much thought into the character and world building. I like my romances to be deeper. A great story with a little bit of heat vs heat, fire, more heat and then pretty much we know nothing but the characters name. (Am I right?)

Emma is who she is. She has a will of steel and a heart of gold and has family and friends. No need to change for society because she is also very intelligent and loves to read. Emma is happy with her life. She wants to make a difference in the world and help women who find themselves a predicament have a place to go. Her friend Lena was one of those women, she needed help and now it is too late to save her, but maybe she can save someone else. She knows if she gets married her choices will be taken away and the chances of her being in a happy marriage are not likely. Emma decides that spinsterhood with a purpose is better and no one is going to convince her otherwise. I LOVED Emma. I don’t know why I connected with her so much but I did.

Nick grew up alone. No siblings. His mother died giving birth to him and his father can’t stand him. He was sent off to school at 5 years old and forgotten about. He has made his way and doesn’t rely on anyone but himself. He would rather be alone. He has all the family he needs being Godfather to Alex and Claire’s twins. Plus Emma is there, as she is Claire’s cousin and Godmother to the same twins. I absolutely love that they know each other. They are around each other. They are friends. They are drawn to each other’s intelligence and banter. It takes them awhile to see that they care for each other. Especially since neither one wants to marry. I loved their story and journey to love. Janna did an amazing job with this one the world and characters are so fun to read about and I am so excited to read the next one!

Thanks for reading!
