When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. Hello friends! I am so excited to share with you this review. I was so lucky to receive an advanced reading copy to review. I have been looking forward to this book so you can imagine my excitement! If you have not read the Remnant Chronicles that needs to be rectified immediately! The trilogy is such a fun read. Lia’s story is so different and the world is unlike any other that I have read. I will make sure to link to those reviews at the bottom of this post. This book is part of the Remnant Universe. It is the same world and some of our favorite characters from the trilogy make an appearance BUT it is it’s own new story. The way Mary E. Pearson has created these new characters and plot had me reading the whole book in a day. I DEVOURED this book.

I loved reading about a girl that has become someone to be reckoned with. I really enjoyed Kazi. Her character was street rat turned soldier for the Queen of Venda. Not any street rat, a thief with all ten fingers. In Venda that is unheard of and earned her the nickname Ten. No she is a thief with all the training of a solider. She is clever and can dupe almost anyone. The Rahtan is on a secret mission to find and steal the biggest target yet but she meets her match in Jase Ballenger. Between the lies they tell each other and the lies they tell themselves.. things become complicated.

Jase is new to his role of Patrei, but has enough family, money and power to make sure the transition is an easy one. Kazi bring a whole new set of problems and questions to solve and he is set to prove that he can be Patrei. He can lead his people, even if there are outside forces that are trying to take his family down and move into his seat of power.

The author made the transition into this story really easy. I thought it might take me awhile to figure out a timeline, or people. Maybe it would be about a place far away from all the cities we read about in the trilogy, but it was so easy. I was hooked by chapter 3. Hell’s Mouth and the Ballenger family is all new but the timeline and how the new characters fit in and mesh with what we already knew perfectly. It was so fun to be back in the world of the Ancients and the Remnant peoples. This is the start of a new series. I’m not sure on how many books it will be, but it ended well and left me wanting more. I can not wait to continue the series!
